Which RunDisney Race Should You Run?

Hi all, so it is getting to be that time of year again! That is right, registration dates are coming up for the latter half of 2016 RunDisney Races as well as RunDisney Events in early 2017! Here are the regular registration dates for upcoming races:

After having signed up for a RunDisney event 3 separate times, I know exactly how it feels to make a decision and then realize that you must follow through. So here is a special guide on how to decide which race to participate in.

First, I must stress the point that: 13.1 miles is 13.1 miles regardless of the fact that you are in the happiest place on Earth. Disney takes these races and the time limits seriously so please do not underestimate distances.

Second, Be realistic. If you are a serious runner, do not expect to get a PR unless you are in the first 2 or 3 corrals. Know your limits, and take the races in steps. I started with a 5k one year then a half the year after and finally worked up to a full 3 years after the half. I did it in pieces and worked up to the Full Marathon.

Third, TRAIN. Signing up for a race 8 months before the actual event is hard because it doesnt seem real. Training for your first half or full should start 6 months prior to the race and you must stick with the training in order to enjoy your race. I barely trained for my half and I spent the days leading up to the race scared and nervous and spent the days after the race in pain. During the race I could not enjoy everything that made the race a Disney event. When I decided to run the Full, I took training seriously and I knew leading up to the race that I was ready and I was able to walk away from the race with minimal soreness.

Finally, remember that you can do anything you set your mind to! If you are a beginner runner and are unsure of whether you can complete a 5K, try it! This is a realistic goal for beginner/non-runners. If you are a 5k master go for the 10k! A harder mileage will be more enjoyable in Disney as long as your goal race is realistic for you!

I highly reccomend RunDisney Events! They are ran smoothly and are tons of fun!

  1. Do you know if the Castaway Cay 5k takes place every time a Disney ship makes a stop at Castaway Cay or is it only on certain cruises? That’s the one I want to do but I don’t think you can sign up ahead of time and I’m not sure if it takes place every time.

    1. Every cruise that stops at castaway cay has a castaway cay 5k. However to get a special disney cruise castaway challenge medal, this event only takes place on the cruise right after the Walt Disney world marathon weeked. If you run any race during wdw marathon weekend and then book this special sailing and run the castaway cay 5k then you get this extra special medal!
